Rugby Weekend

Can you believe that I have less than a month left in my first semester? I know that I cannot.

Time has been flying by faster than ever, but it is a comfort to know that I still have plenty of time left in this beautiful country. My semester technically ends November 20th, but my last final is on the 9th, so I will get a nice week and a half or so to relax before my summer holiday travels.  I am currently mulling over the idea of attending a three day Buddhist retreat that is here near PMB.

This past weekend has been rugby filled.
Friday was the final University Rugby game and I had fun attending the sport on a collegiate level. It is a quite different atmosphere than collegiate sports back home.

Saturday I had the privilege of attending a professional rugby game with Catherine, Li and two of our new Canadian friends in Durban : Durban Sharks versus Western Province (Cape Town). The game was the final Currie Cup game and took place in Kings Park Stadium.

If you do not know anything about rugby, I am sorry, I cannot help you; however, while not knowing any of the rules, it was still extremely entertaining to watch.

I have some fun clips to share:

(Sharks are the black team and WP is the blue and white team)

Throwing in a pass

A short display of rugby roughness

Despite the rain and despite the Sharks losing,  the 5 of us had a great time and I hope it is not my last professional rugby game.

Before the game, we originally intended to go surfing. Unfortunately for us, the waves were not tempting enough so we decided to go kayaking instead. This was a lot of fun and we even paddled past one of the shark nets that keep the sharks from getting too near the shore. Disappointingly, but most likely fortunately, we did not glimpse any sharks in the water.

As a joke, the Denning side of my family has started calling this El's Party Blog :p While amusing and true to the extent that I only really post the fun and seemingly exciting things, I would also like to point out that I do have 3 exams this week and finals are rapidly approaching, but who wants to read about that?

Much love,

El

South African English Vocabulary

Sawubona!

I hope everybody had a great weekend!

So, I thought for this post it would be fun to list some of the English vocabulary here that differs from the English vocabulary back home.

This is a working list that I can continue to update when I discover more.
(If any of my international friends or my SA friends have any corrections or changes, please let me know!)

University --- Varsity
Classes    ---  Modules
Vacation  ---  Vac (Pronounced Vack)

The trunk of your car --- the boot (one of my favorites)
Traffic lights  --- robots
Pick-up Trucks --- Bukkies (pronounced "buckees")
Gas   --- Petrol
Gas Station --- Petrol Station or Garage

Sneakers/Tennis Shoes --- Takkies (Pronounced "tackees")
Flip Flops --- Flops
Cardigan/ Sweater --- Jersey
Some slip-on sandals --- slippers

Plastic Bag (like at a grocery store) --- Packet or Plastic
Napkins (the paper ones) --- serviettes
The restaurant check/bill --- is always called the bill
BBQ --- Braai
Cookies --- Biscuits
Carry Out --- Take Away
To be drunk --- sloshed

Minutes (for a phone) --- airtime
Text message --- SMS (or BBM because mostly everyone here has a BlackBerry)
To steal --- pinch
Trash Can --- Bin

Also:
The drugstore will always be called a pharmacy (if you ask for a drug store they may be very confused)
and when looking for a restroom in public, you usually have to ask for the toilets, not the bathroom (otherwise they may think you want to bathe and be as equally confused).

On a different note, this weekend was very nice.

On Friday, I went to the school's rugby game on campus and then on Saturday a group of us went to Durban to celebrate our friend,  Emily Rojas's 20th Birthday. In addition, surprise to us all, we also got to celebrate her recent engagement to Mo Mooideen!
We made crepes in the morning with ice cream and strawberries and then spent the afternoon on the beach. That evening we went to our favorite hotspot Joe Cools. All in all, a very successful weekend :)

Hope everyone is doing well!

Much Love,

El
